Sharing Your Family Tree on Ancestry

There have been many clients in the past that ask that I document my research on their family trees on Ancestry.com. As a result, I must walk them through the process of inviting me to share their tree, which can be a bit difficult if you are not familiar with the procedure.  With that in mind I thought I would go ahead and post a blog article about the steps to add someone like me to work on your personal tree.

First thing to do is to pull up your family tree in tree form.

Look to the left side menu for the three dots and click on that.

A menu will pop up and you need to click on tree settings.

Look at the top of the page that opens and click on the Invitations link. Afterwards click on the “+ Invite people” button near the top of the page.

A pop-up will open with various ways of inviting people to view your tree.  Th first choice is for a link that you can copy and email or text a link to someone.  The second choice, which is my preference, is to email an invitation to someone.

After entering my (or someone else’s) email into the email box go to the dropdown box for “Role” and click on “Editor.” When you click on “Editor” the toggle for “See living people” will automatically switch to yes.  Please do not turn that toggle switch off as that will restrict my ability to connect the families to living individuals.  Last of all click on the “Send invites” button at the bottom of the page.

That’s it!  You have just sent me an invitation to view and edit your tree while I am doing the research on your family.  This also allows me to add documents or information that is not on Ancestry.com.
